Rabindra-Sangeet (Tagore Song): Phholti Jhore Gachhe Re (This Flower Has Withered)

Composed: 1291 (1885)

Category: Prem O Prokriti (Love and Nature)

The Song in English Script:

Phulti jhore gechhe re

Bujhi shey ushar alo ushar deshe chole gechhe

   Shudhu shey pakhiti    mudiya ankhiti

Sharadin akla boshe gan gahitechhe

Pratidin dekhto jare aar to tare dekhte na paye –

Tobu shey nitti ashe gachher shakhe, sheikhanetei boshe thake,

Sharadin shei ganti gaye      shondhya hole kothaay chole jaye

The Song in English Translation:

                               This flower       has withered.

First light of morn she seemed,     now has fled    to the realm of Dawn.

Only the lone bird                with its eyes closed

Chants all day                  its lonesome lay.

Wasn’t she always in sight before        why doesn’t he see her any more—

Yet he doesn’t miss a day     he alights on the bough     till twilight does he stay,

Sings the same song           then into the night        flies away.
