Shubho Kormopothey (On All Good Missions)

Tagore (1861-1941)

Rabindra-Sangeet (Tagore Song): Shubho Kormopothey (On All Good Missions)

Composed: 10th Magh, 1343 (24th January, 1937)

Category: Swadesh (Patriotic)

The Song in English Script:

Shubha karmopathe dharo nirbhai gaan.

Shab durbal sangshai hok aboshaan.

Chiro- shaktior nirjharo nitya jhare

Laho shey abhishek lolat pare.

Tabo jagroto nirmal nutan pran.

Tyagbrote nik deekkha,

Bighno hote nik shikkha-

Nishthur shankat dik shamman.

Dukhkhai hok tabo bitto mohan.

Chalo jatree chalo dinraatri-

Karo amritalokpath anushandhan.

Jarotatamos haw-o utteerno,

Klantijaal karo deerno bideerno-

Din-ante aporajito chitte

Mrityutoron teerthe karo snan.

The Song in English Translation:

On all good missions sing your fearless song

Let all doubt and confusion be gone.

Eternal spring of vigor forever sprinkles life

Be cleansed in that and be purified.

Let this soul, newly awakened and refulgent

Be initiated into the path of offering this life.

Let blocks and bars          be the teacher—

Let cruel crises bestow reverence

Let sorrow alone be the true wealth.

Come on traveler fare night and day.

Make a quest for the eternal life-giving way.

Overcome the dark indolence

Fling away the mesh of weariness

At day’s end as victorious

Transcend death and be purity itself.

  1. I always felt this was an overwhelming almost impossible undertaking, but the spirit of this song itself brightens the path so full of suffering. Let us sing. Thank you.
