The two songs are from the dance drama Chitrangada (Written in February, 1936)

Chitrangada is the ‘not so beautiful’ warrior princess who meets Arjuna, the great hero and falls in love, though Arjuna rejects her on the plea that he’s now on a vow of celibacy. With the help of love god Chitrangada gets herself transformed into a beauty for a year. Arjuna is besotted with this beauty. Chitrangada is disheartened that her hero is wooing falsehood. In the end she reveals her true self & Arjuna acknowledges her worth and accepts her.

The first song is about the ugly princess described by Chitrangada herself in the guise of the Beauty to Arjuna and the second one is the princess revealing her true regal identity.

Tagore’s Chitrangada is a Desire to be an equal consort to the man of love while being a true woman.

The First Song in English Script:

Chhi chhi kutsit kurup shey .

Heno bankim bhurujug nahi tar,

Heno ujjallo kajjalo-ankhitara .

Sandhite pare lakkha Keenankito tar bahu,

Bnidhite pare na beerbakhsa

Kutil katakkhashare .

Nahi lajja, nahi shanka,

Nahi nisthur sundar ranga,

Nahi neerab bhangir sangeetleela

Ingitchhandamadhur .

The First Song In English Translation

Oh ugly, unsightly she is.

Such curved brows as mine she has not,

neither does she have my dark starlit eye.

She can hit the bull’s eye,

her arms are strong, skilled to bend the bow.

Yet she is denied Cupid’s arrow,

and that play of eyes.

Coy she is not, neither a wimp;

she knows not to smirk nor be vile.

Melody lacks in her silent gestures,

she has no feminine wiles.

The Second Song in English Script:

Aami chitrangada, aami rajendranandinee .

Nohi debi, nohi shamannya naree .

Puja kori more rakhibe urdhe

Shey nohi nohi,

Hela kori more rakhibe pichhe

Shey nohi nohi .

Jodi parshwe rakho more

Shankate shampade,

Shammati dao jodi kathin brate

Shahai hote,

Pabe tabe tumi chinite more .

Aaj shudhu kori nibedon

Aami chitrangada rajendranandinee

The Second Song in English Translation:

I am Chitrangada; the king’s daughter.

I am no goddess neither an ordinary woman.

Am I to be on a lofty seat to be worshipped,

I am not that, not that.

Am I to be ignored to be cast behind,

I am not that, not that.

If in crises and prosperity

by your side you have me,

If you consent to share with me

your life’s duty,

Then I trust you shall know my true identity.

But for now all that I can say—

I am Chitrangada, the empire’s Princess.
