Adhara Madhuri (Elusive Bliss)

165px-rabindranath_tagore_ra-tha_seal_initials

Tagore’s Bengali-script initials are worked into this “RA-THA”(of RAbindranath THAkur) wooden seal, which bears close stylistic similarity to designs used in traditional Haida carvings. Tagore often embellished his manuscripts with such art. (Dyson 2001)

Rabindra-Sangeet (Tagore Song): Adhara Madhuri (Elusive Bliss)

Composed: 1345 (1945)

Category: Prem (Love)

The Song in English Script:

Tari jhara phooler gandho or antare dhaka

       Tumi dako ore nam dhorey

             O je tomari chena

Tomari desher akash o je jane,        tomar rater tara,

Tomari bakulbaner gane o daye sara

                Nache tomari kankoneree tale

The Song in English Translation:

Elusive bliss lies captive in my melodic lilts.

She is a warbler of the distant dawn

            singing faraway night’s song.

Her wings are tinged with crimson Ashok *of bygone Spring,

with its scent of withered blooms has she filled herself within.

O foreign maiden,

call out to her by her name

for to you she is so familiar.

She knows your skies,               your night stars,

to your woodland songs she responds—

to the jingling beat of your bangles she dances.

*Ashok is a deep red flower.
