Rabindra-Sangeet (Tagore Song): Lokkhi Jokhon Ashbe (When Lakshmi Arrives)

Composed: 2nd Ashwin, 1321 (17th September 1914)

Category: Puja (Worship / Devotional)

The Song in English Script:

Lakhsmi jakhon aashbe takhon kothai tare dibi re thnai.

Dakh, re cheye aapon-pane, poddoti nai poddoti nai.

Phirchhe kende prabhat batash, Aalok je tar mlan hatash.

Mukhe cheye aakash tore shudhai aaji neerabe tai.

Kato gopan asha niye kon se gahon raatrisheshe.

Agadh jaler tala hote amol kunri uthlo bheshe.

Halo na tar phute otha, kakhon bhenge parlo bonta,

Marta-kachhe swarga ja chai shei madhuree kotha re pai.

The Song in English Translation:

When Lakshmi* arrives where will you seat her?

Look within your core, the lotus is not there, not there.

Morning breeze bemoans, her dim light wears a look of woe,

and the sky in silence gazing into your face asks the same.

At the long night’s end with much hope within

soars the sacred bud, from beneath the deep waters.

Yet not destined to blossom,   as its stalk gets broken—

Where do we get the grace that heaven asks of the mortals?

*Lakshmi is the Goddess of bounty, her seat is the sacred lotus.
