Rabindra-Sangeet (Tagore Song): Tori Amar Hothat Dube Jaye (My Boat Sinks)

Composed: 1307 (1901)

Category: Bichitra (Miscellaneous)

The Song in English Script:

Tori aamar hathat dube jaye

Konkhane re kon pashaner ghaye.

Nabeen tori natun chale,  dii ni paari agadh jole-

Bahi taare khalar chhole kinar-kinarai.

Bhesechhilo sroter bhorey,  eka chilem karno dhore-

Legechhilo paaler pare madhur mridu baye.

Shukhe chhilem aapon-mone,  megh chhilo na gagankone-

Laagbe tori kusumbane chhilem shei ashaye.

The Song in English Translation:

My boat sinks

Who knows what hidden rock struck it.

On the maiden voyage,       I ventured not into deep waters—

I steered it playfully close to the water’s edge.

It drifted with the tide     while I was alone at the helm—

the zephyr was enough for it to be under sail.

I was blithe, buoyant      with not a cloud in the sky corner—

I had high hopes of making it to a floral shore;

when in a trice my boat sinks.

Translated by Sumana Roy

The Song is Here sung by Rezwana Choudhury Bannya
